Volunteering for an alternative Christmas

Karen's done her packing

Next stop: Galapagos Islands

Hotel La Tour sales manager Karen Ward is foregoing the tinsel and turkey this Christmas to travel half way around the world to help underprivileged children.

She’s waving goodbye to Team La Tour to work as a teacher in the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific. Karen, 36, will be flying out to Santa Cruz Island on December 18 to spend four weeks living with a local family and teaching English to kids at an International Secondary School. She’ll be part of a team from i-to-i Volunteering, helping students to work towards university places and apply for scholarships abroad. Karen said: “I love Christmas but really wanted to do something different this year. The volunteer programme allows me to visit a beautiful but relatively poor country and to understand the challenges facing the community.  I will be giving my time to teach English as a foreign language while living with a local family.”

Karen’s been granted extended leave as part of Hotel La Tour’s community responsibility programme and we’re also supporting her efforts by loading her up with parcels of much-needed classroom resources.

Find out how she gets on: Keep an eye out for Karen’s blogposts from the Galapagos Islands.
