As the new City Park takes shape next to Hotel La Tour, our interest in all things green took us on a tour of our neighbouring building Hive – the first residential development in Birmingham city centre to offer residents their very own secret garden.
A unique city centre sanctuary in which to relax, the secret garden, discreetly located at the rear of the development, offer residents elevated views across the city’s Eastside and the new park.
John Moffat, development director for Hive commented: “The secret garden was borne out of our desire to offer residents at Hive space to enjoy both inside and outside. With the development situated in an elevated position overlooking Eastside, we had the perfect opportunity to provide purchasers with their own private city centre garden integrated within the development’s wider built environment.
“Similarly to properties within Hive, we wanted to subdivide the outdoor living space, creating a secret garden of differing facets that would appeal to varying moods and tastes. For some the garden will be about escaping within a natural environment while for others it will be more of a social space in which to catch up with their neighbours.”
Designed by TPM Landscape, entrance to the secret garden is guided by a formal yew hedge which lines the approach to a feature wall and gateway behind which the garden is concealed. Beyond the ornate gate, residents pass into a courtyard area where they can choose to enter the indoor or outdoor living space at Hive.
Providing functional outdoor rooms for relaxation, sensory delight, social interaction, play and work, the secret garden presents living space with year round aesthetic appeal. The garden has been divided into a series of areas enclosed by flowering planting beds, trees and shrubs with each designed to encourage different uses from quiet escapism to group gatherings.
Part of the £600m mixed-use Masshouse scheme in Birmingham’s Eastside, Hive brings an exciting and innovative new collection of 167 studio suites, one and two bedroom apartments to the city centre, within walking distance of the Bullring and Colmore Business District – and it’s perfectly located of course to enjoy Aalto Restaurant, Alvar Bar and Café Ezra located within Hotel La Tour!
