The award-winning play Rasputin’s Mother is coming to Birmingham’s Old Joint Stock Theatre this month.
Written by professional theatre critic Michael Davies, the play is the winner of the 2012-2013 National Playwriting Competition which is awarded annually to the best script written for the stage.
This world premiere is performed by Encore Drama, directed by Colin Lewisohn and with a cast including award-winning actors Warwick St John and Pam Hilton. The drama takes an alternative “fantasy” look at the infamous Mad Monk, whose sinister charisma cast a shadow over the final days of the monarchy in pre-Communist Russia.
Michael said: “Rasputin’s Mother has been something of a labour of love, developed over a number of years. The original idea came out of our endless fascination with so-called ‘monsters’ like Rasputin. I wanted to try to work out what made them tick.
“Fortunately, I’ve had some fantastic encouragement along the way from the likes of Alan Ayckbourn and Derek Jacobi, and to see the show finally in production is the ultimate prize for a playwright.”
You can see Rasputin’s Mother at the Old Joint Stock Theatre on March 22 and 23.
