When it comes to keeping shiny new Hotel La Tour Birmingham spick and span, Charlie Wilson is the man. As Maintenance Manager his remit is wide and his days can be long – from fixing the plumbing to keeping the lifts running smoothly and all manner of other essentials. Charlie joined the team right in the early days. He’s a qualified carpenter and joiner and has worked at hotels before as a senior engineer. He has also worked at the world-famous Belfry Brabazon golf course as a green keeper and is currently awaiting results from a HNC in the Construction and Built environment sector.
What do you most like about Birmingham: I love the jewellery quarter I spent many years there working in my shop selling high end brand spectacles and sunglasses when I was a lot younger, I still have many friends there who work in the trade.
The best things about working in the city centre are … Being in walking distance from all the shops, restaurants and bars, especially on a Friday for a quick pint after work!
What attracted you to work here: The challenge and being involved in the pre and post opening of the hotel was very interesting, meeting various different contractors and working with Galliford Try Construction taught me a lot. The most surprising and refreshing thing is that we have such a young team, which is refreshing in this industry and certainly makes it stand out from the rest in Birmingham.
What do you like to do in your spare time: I enjoy landscaping and gardening, I have just finished my own garden, which has occupied the majority of my spare time. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends, especially my girlfriend Kate and my little niece, Millie.
What’s on your ipod at the moment: Abit of everything really, Rolling stones, Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Paul Weller and I also love house and trance music!
Favourite TV show: Only Fools and Horses, nothing better!
Favourite style of food to eat – favourite type of cooking: I enjoy Italian food, but I’m not the best cook, I give it a go from time to time and reckon my calzone is pretty good.
What’s your favourite dish on the menu at Aalto: Has to be steak, love a bit of quality meat.
Can you give some examples of places where you know you’ll get great customer service: A restaurant I visit regularly in the South of Spain called Da Bruno, they always remember me and my family, best service I’ve ever had!
Not many people know this about me but ….. I owned my own business from the age of 20, with a little help from my dad, I then sold it on three years later and re-trained as a carpenter.
