See The City For Free: Top Things To Do

Recently voted the UK’s best city, Birmingham is the place to go for shopping, sightseeing or spa breaks. Fondly known as England’s second capital, this popular city is home to over a million people and is truly multicultural with its Chinese Soho quarter and Balti triangle amongst some of the attractions. Birmingham has so much to offer, and can cater for the young and old with ease. Birmingham’s architecture is truly breathtaking and what better way to experience the city’s skyline than when on foot? Birmingham is a compact city that has many pedestrianised areas and is very easy to walk around the city centre at your leisure to enjoy the sights and sounds of this bustling area. From St Phillips Square to the stunning Cathedral or the historic Town Hall to the modern Bullring, there is so much to see, and a trip to the fashion mecca of the Midlands wouldn’t be complete without some window shopping in the fabulous malls!

If you prefer a more scenic serene stroll then why not make your way down to Grand Union Canal, and enjoy watching the traditionally decorated barges sail along the calm waters. Why not get back to nature in Birmingham and while away a few hours at Eastside City Park? Opened in December 2012, this stunning park is the first of its kind in Birmingham for 130 years and boasts 310 trees, extensive formal lawns, and its very own canal which is 188m and includes 21 jet fountains.

Birmingham city centre offers a number of free events throughout the year. Be sure to visit The Town Hall and Symphony Hall website as they regularly hold free concerts and events in a wide range of genres from classical to jazz and much more. Depending on what time of year you are visiting, make sure that you pop along to the International Dance Festival in April and May or the famous Frankfurt Christmas Market during December. The recently refurbished Birmingham Library also has a wealth of activities for all ages, so if the weather is a little unpredictable be sure to check out this brilliant facility for fun under cover.
