It’s colourful, riotous and rip-roaring fun – Hairspray has made a welcome return to the Hippodrome stage and we were lucky enough to be there last night.
Featuring the sweet and soulful Marcus Collins (X Factor) as Seaweed J Stubbs, in his professional theatre debut, and Lucy Benjamin (EastEnders) as Velma Von Tussle, it’s 1960’s America and change is in the air. Baltimore’s Tracy Turnblad – big girl, big hair, big heart – is passionate about dancing and no-one, nothing and nobody will stop her fulfilling her dream of a spot on the local TV dance programme, The Corny Collins Show.
Mark Benton plays the larger than life Edna Turnblad and stole the show with “Timeless to Me”, a poignant duet with (relatively) pint-sized husband Wilbur Turnblad played by the wonderful Paul Rider.
Also making her professional theatre debut is Tracy Turnblad who, with an irrepressible energy and sense of moral rightness, helps to underpin the message of the show and fulfil her dream of bringing kids of all backgrounds together to dance.
Hairspray runs at Birmingham Hippodrome until Saturday 1 June 2013
