Stuff the turkey, put your feed up and read a book this Christmas

So the presents are wrapped, TV is covered by iPlayer and the trifle is setting in the fridge.

It’s time to put your feet up and read a book. Here is the Hotel La Tour guide to festive fiction:

Some easy local history …

  • Chocolate Girls by Annie Murray: the story of three very different women working together at Cadbury’s Bournville factory.

Put down those humbugs and pick up a classic …

  • Dickens’ A Christmas Carol: you know the story, have probably seen the film but have you read the book? No? It’s time you did.

Get out the tissues …

  • The Things We Know Now by Catherine Dunne: Patrick’s life of privilege with second wife Ella is shattered beyond repair and the family is torn apart by suspicion, conflict and loss. Very poignant.

The dark side of the moon …

  • The Infinitie Tides by Christian Keifer: Described as “quietly devastating” so don’t try this if you’re likely to suffer from New Year blues. But if you’re capitivated by space travel you might like this story of astronaut Keith Corcoran who achieves his ambition of walking in space as his life on earth is irrevocably changed forever.

Travel to snowy lands …

  • The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey: Set in harsh 1920s Alaska, a magical tale with a sprinkle of whimsy. Beautifully written, you can feel the chill and long for a proper meal!

and journey to The Big Apple …

  • Humans of New York by Brandon Stanton: er, not exactly fiction but definitely one for fans of NYNY. Based on the blog which has more than million fans, this is a great one for the coffee table too.

Isn’t it incredible how all those letters collected onto a series of pages can spell out so many different things?

Merry Christmas.
