Choose your menu to bring luck at New Year

Mark the New Year with a meal carefully chosen to help bring fortune and happiness.

Did you know that in Spain revellers will be sure to eat one grape for each strike of the clock at midnight and, in many countries cooked greens are eaten at New Year as their leaves look like folded money and are symbolic of economic fortune?

Fish, a popular food for feasting since the Middle Ages, is also prevalent on New Year menus with herring roe eaten for fertility in Japan, herring consumed at midnight in Poland and Germany – where they also enjoy carp, place a few fish scales in their wallets for good luck.
